Pavan K. The story arcs of most of the other characters, like Panna, Soni and Moni, Kanta and Guddu, or Kaka, also feel forced and designed only to evoke sympathy. Book - Two Author - Gulzar. Remember me on this computer. Include Out of Stock. Like many people who had their roots on either side of the border ripped out, he too nurtures within his heart a desire to see both countries get united.
One can feel Gulzar's indignation and deep pain at the turn of events that cleaved the great nation into two.
But seen as a whole the book isn't what you'd expect from someone like Gulzar. The book simply feels like a bunch of emotional events melodramatically cobbled together, using the thread of Partition. Of course, the book is said to be based upon real events, recounted by the families that went through the pain of partition, but somehow, it doesn't all stick together as a whole.
May be, Gulzar was involved in this work more as a victim, dealing with it more at an emotional level, than as an author. A nice, simple read, from an author renowned for painting vivid pictures with his words.
The book can also serve as a reminder or as an introduction to that gory part of our collective past. But as a work of literary quality, it simply doesn't count for much. The Story 2. For me, Gulzar has always been someone who wrote like he we were writing directly to me, for me.
And while he wrote for me, his way and words lent an aesthetic value to my most mundane emotions in a manner that I could have never been able to do myself. It was immensely appealing to find that those prosaic feelings would make such elegant poetry.
The fact that it was written in Urdu, and Gulzar himself does not find the translation satisfactory could be one reason behind it. It could also be that my life has been so far removed from the ones who lived these events that the fault lies entirely with my inability to understand. Two is not a bad story.
I could find myself sympathizing with the characters at different points in the book. However, I could, at no point, really feel their agony. It felt like a Vishal Bhardwaj movie that has a serious tone and sensitive content but fails to evoke the emotions it aims for. For example, the character of Fauji, who is clearly meant to be the protagonist of the story, never inspires the same level of respect that similar tragic heroes of the past have received.
His friendship with Lakhbeera, perhaps because it never goes through a real trial, fails to strike a chord. Words left unspoken between lovers often give love stories its haunting appeal. But it could have done the story a lot of good if there was a bit more build-up around what was meant and never spoken. The story arcs of most of the other characters, like Panna, Soni and Moni, Kanta and Guddu, or Kaka, also feel forced and designed only to evoke sympathy.
While there is no underplaying the fact that the events accompanying the partition were horrible and deeply agonizing, the story, at times, does not appear to be more than a newspaper article.
You read about the tragedies that befell them, sympathize with their stories, and forget about them the moment you fold back the newspaper. For a subject so important that so little has been written on, a story that so easily fades from memory is the bigger tragedy for the people of Campbellpur. Prompt delivery. Nicely packed to prevent damages. The hardcover edition is a beautiful little book with good quality pages. The cover image, borrowed from Getty images, feels weirdly apt to describe the story.
For a book that will take you two to three hours to read and digest, it is a good buy at Rs. Movie tickets for movies with worse screenplay cost double.
